Wiser Smart TRV Head Zigbee Wireless Room-by-Room Control

The Drayton Wiser Smart Radiator Thermostat (WV704R0A0902) is a battery-powered smart TRV head that adds individual room-by-room temperature and scheduling control to an existing Drayton Wiser heating system. It mounts directly onto most standard radiator valves — replacing the existing TRV head without tools or wiring — and communicates wirelessly via Zigbee to the Wiser Heat Hub. From the Wiser Heat App (iOS and Android) or via voice commands (Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant), you can set independent daily and weekly schedules for every room, boost individual radiators for 30 minutes to 3 hours, and monitor energy use. The multiple onboard sensors enable Open Window Detection — automatically cutting the heat if a sudden temperature drop is detected — while automatic valve protection periodically exercises the valve mechanism to prevent limescale seizure. Certified to ErP Class A+1 and contributing a +5% ErP improvement rating, the thermostat supports Wiser's Eco Mode, Away Mode and Comfort Mode for intelligent, low-waste heating across the whole home. A Wiser Heat Hub (sold separately) must already be installed to use this device.

Red Dot Award — Product Design 2018

Recognised internationally for outstanding design quality, the Wiser Radiator Thermostat won the prestigious Red Dot Award for its distinctive twist-top interface, compact form and clean aesthetic — inspired by the iconic Drayton TRV4 but reimagined as a modern smart device.

Key Features

🌡️ Multi-Sensor Precision Temperature Control — 0 to 45°CMultiple integrated temperature sensors provide highly accurate room temperature measurement, minimising the temperature swing typical of single-sensor TRVs. The thermostat controls water flow through the radiator to maintain the target temperature precisely. The full 0–45°C range covers everything from frost protection (typically set at 5°C) through sleeping temperatures to maximum warmth for a cold bathroom.
📱 App-Based Room Scheduling via Wiser Heat AppEach radiator thermostat can be assigned to a named room within the Wiser app and given its own fully independent daily or weekly heating schedule. Set different temperatures for morning, daytime, evening and overnight in every room — so bedrooms can cool down while the living room stays warm, or a child's nursery maintains a constant temperature regardless of the rest of the house. The app works on your home Wi-Fi network without internet access; remote access from outside the home requires an internet connection.
🔄 Twist-Top Boost Interface with Spring-BackThe distinctive twist-top lets anyone in the room boost the temperature without needing the app. Twist it up to increase the setpoint, twist it down to reduce it, or activate a timed boost. When released, the top springs back to its neutral position — providing tactile confirmation of the adjustment while keeping the design clean and unobtrusive. This physical boost function is particularly useful for guests or family members who don't use the app.
🪟 Open Window DetectionWhen a window is opened, the room temperature typically drops rapidly. The Wiser TRV's multiple sensors detect this sudden temperature fall and automatically shut the radiator valve to prevent heating a room with a window open — eliminating the common energy waste of running the boiler while cold outside air pours in. The heating resumes automatically once the temperature stabilises after the window is closed.
🔒 Device Lock — Child & Tamper ProtectionActivate the Device Lock feature via the app to prevent the physical controls from being changed at the thermostat. Ideal for households with young children who might otherwise play with the twist-top, or for shared properties and offices where you want to prevent local overrides. Temperature setpoints and schedules can still be managed from the app.
⚙️ Automatic Valve Protection — Anti-LimescaleThe Wiser TRV periodically runs an automatic valve exercise cycle, moving the pin mechanism even when the valve has been in one position for a prolonged period. This prevents the common issue of limescale seizing the valve in an open or closed position — a leading cause of radiators that won't shut off or won't heat up — protecting both the thermostat and the valve body itself from long-term damage.
🔵 Zigbee Wireless — Mesh Network via Wiser Heat HubThe thermostat communicates via the Zigbee wireless protocol to the Wiser Heat Hub, which acts as the system coordinator. Zigbee devices form a self-healing mesh network — each device can relay signals from others, extending the network's range and resilience. No hub or bridge is required at each radiator; one Wiser Heat Hub supports the full system of up to 32 radiator thermostats in up to 16 rooms.
🎙️ Voice Control — Alexa, Google Assistant & IFTTTWorks natively with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant for voice commands such as "Alexa, set the living room to 21 degrees" or "OK Google, boost the kitchen heating." IFTTT integration enables advanced automation, including geofencing — so Away Mode can activate automatically when your smartphone leaves the home area, without any manual intervention.

Smart Heating Modes

🌿 Eco Mode

Reduces heating to a lower background temperature when rooms are unlikely to be occupied, reducing boiler running time and energy waste without letting the home get cold.

✈️ Away Mode

Overrides all schedules and drops setpoints to a low frost-protection temperature when you leave home. Can activate automatically via geofencing through IFTTT. Saves up to 14% energy.

🏠 Comfort Mode

Predictive pre-heating — the system learns how long your home takes to warm up and starts the boiler early enough that rooms reach the target temperature exactly when you need them, not after.

Boost

Activate a 30-minute to 3-hour boost on any individual radiator from the twist-top or the app — useful when a room is colder than expected or guests arrive unexpectedly in an unheated room.

Installation — Fits Most UK Radiator Valves

The Wiser TRV head fits directly onto the valve body on your radiator — no plumber or electrician required. Simply unscrew the existing TRV head and screw on the Wiser head using the ring nut provided. Adapters for the two most common UK valve types are included in the box:

✅ Compatible valve connections (adapters included):

  • M30 × 1.5mm — the standard thread used on the majority of UK radiator valves, including Drayton, Honeywell, Pegler, IMI and most own-brand plumbing supplies valves
  • Danfoss RA — the most common alternative in UK installations, widely fitted from the 1980s onwards; a dedicated Danfoss RA adapter is included in every box
⚠️ Requires a Wiser Heat Hub: This thermostat head is an add-on accessory. It only operates when paired with an existing Wiser Heat Hub (sold separately as part of any Drayton Wiser Kit). It cannot function as a standalone device or with any other smart heating system.

⚠️ Not compatible with: Gravity-fed central heating systems, or boilers that require manufacturer-specific proprietary controls to operate. If in doubt, check with your heating engineer before purchasing.

FAQs

Do I need to buy anything else to use this?

Yes. The WV704R0A0902 is an add-on device — it only works as part of an existing Drayton Wiser smart heating system. You must already have a Wiser Heat Hub installed and commissioned. The Hub is included in all Drayton Wiser Kits (available in single-zone and multi-zone versions for combination and system boilers). If you're starting from scratch, you need a Wiser Kit first; if you already have a Wiser system, this thermostat can be added to it at any time.

How many of these do I need?

For maximum energy saving and comfort, Drayton recommends one thermostat per radiator. However, most people prioritise the rooms they use most — fitting a thermostat in the living room, main bedroom, kitchen and bathroom first, then expanding over time. A single Wiser system supports up to 32 radiator thermostats across up to 16 rooms, so you can grow the system gradually and add more thermostats whenever you like.

Can I install this myself?

Yes — no tools or wiring are needed. Unscrew the existing TRV head anticlockwise from the valve body, then screw the Wiser head on using the supplied ring nut. Use the Danfoss RA adapter if your valve requires it. Then open the Wiser app to add the new device to your system. Drayton suggests the installation takes around 5 minutes per radiator. If you are unsure about your valve type, a qualified heating engineer can confirm compatibility.

Will it work with my boiler?

The Wiser system is compatible with all common UK boiler types, including combination boilers, system boilers and heat-only (regular) boilers. It is not compatible with gravity-fed central heating systems (found in some older properties where the header tank is in the loft), or with boilers that require their own manufacturer-specific controls to function. If you are unsure, check with your heating engineer. The Wiser Heat Hub installation guide also lists confirmed compatible boiler types.

Can I use voice control to set individual room temperatures?

Yes. Once connected to Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant via the Wiser skill/action, you can control individual rooms by name — for example, "Alexa, set the bedroom to 18 degrees" or "OK Google, boost the living room heating." The Wiser app also lets you group rooms so you can control multiple zones at once with a single voice command.

How does Open Window Detection work?

The thermostat's multiple onboard sensors continuously monitor the room temperature. When a window or external door is opened, cold air causes a rapid fall in measured temperature. The Wiser TRV detects this sudden drop and automatically closes the valve to stop heating the room — preventing energy waste from heating a room with a window open. Once the temperature stabilises (indicating the window has been closed), normal heating resumes automatically. No user intervention is needed.

Is it compatible with Home Assistant or Zigbee2MQTT?

The WV704R0A0902 uses standard Zigbee and has community-verified support in Zigbee2MQTT (device model "iTRV", manufacturer "Schneider Electric"). It can be integrated into Home Assistant and similar platforms by pairing it directly with a Zigbee coordinator rather than the Wiser Hub. Note that operating it outside the Wiser ecosystem means the Wiser app features (Comfort Mode, Away Mode, etc.) are not available — you would configure the thermostat behaviour entirely within your chosen home automation platform. This is an advanced configuration not supported by Drayton.
