The MultiPlus 48V/20000VA is a high-power unit (80 kg, four M8 DC bolt connections). Installation must be carried out by a qualified electrician familiar with Victron VE.Bus commissioning. Settings may only be changed by a suitably trained installer in accordance with local wiring regulations.
⚠ Battery Bank Compatibility
Designed for 48 V DC battery systems with an input voltage range of 38–60 V. Compatible with lead-acid (AGM, GEL, OPzS, tubular plate) and lithium (LiFePO₄) batteries. Lithium configurations require correct BMS integration — consult a Victron dealer before specifying battery type and capacity. A minimum battery bank sufficient to sustain the 250 A charge current is strongly recommended.
ℹ Part of the Full Victron Ecosystem
This unit communicates over VE.Bus and integrates natively with Cerbo GX, Ekrano GX, VRM portal, VictronConnect app, and Digital Multi Control Panel. Up to three units can be configured in three-phase operation; parallel systems require an external AC transfer switch. An optional 100 A AC current sensor enables PowerAssist and grid self-consumption optimisation.
True Sine Wave Inverter

Produces a pure, utility-quality sine wave at 230 VAC ±2%, making it safe for sensitive electronics, motor-driven equipment, and medical devices. At 25°C the unit sustains the full 20 kW continuously — dropping to 18 kW at 40°C and 14 kW at 65°C with fan-assisted thermal management.

250 A Adaptive Four-Stage Charger

The integrated charger delivers up to 250 A at 25°C (240 A at 40°C) using Victron's adaptive charging algorithm — automatically adjusting absorption time based on depth of discharge to prevent overcharging and extend battery life. Supports bulk, absorption, float, and storage modes with configurable voltages via VEConfigure.

PowerControl & PowerAssist

PowerControl limits battery charging to prevent overloading a generator or grid connection. PowerAssist goes further: when peak load demand exceeds the available AC supply, the inverter supplements it with battery power in real time — then recharges when demand falls. The maximum AC input current is 100 A.

Seamless UPS Transfer (<20 ms)

When grid or generator power fails, the MultiPlus switches to inverter mode in less than 20 milliseconds — fast enough that computers, NAS devices, and sensitive HVAC controls continue running without any interruption. The main AC output is a no-break output; a second output can be configured for non-critical loads only.

Two Independent AC Outputs

The primary AC output is a permanent, no-break supply that remains live on both grid and battery power. The second AC output (live only when AC input is present) is ideal for high-draw appliances such as immersion heaters or EV chargers that should not discharge the battery — keeping battery reserve for essential loads.

Parallel & Three-Phase Scalability

Three MultiPlus 20k units can be configured in three-phase operation to deliver up to 60 kW three-phase AC output — meeting the needs of large commercial premises, agricultural sites, and industrial off-grid installations. Parallel operation requires an external AC transfer switch; all units communicate via VE.Bus.

Solar & Grid Self-Consumption

Using the optional 100 A external AC current sensor, the MultiPlus can operate as part of a grid-connected ESS (Energy Storage System), optimising solar self-consumption, preventing grid feed-in, and automatically sourcing from the cheapest available energy at any moment. Compatible with both solar charge controllers and grid-tie inverters.

Remote Monitoring via VRM Portal

Pair with a Cerbo GX or Ekrano GX to access the free Victron VRM portal from any browser or the VRM mobile app. View live and historical system data, receive alarm notifications by email or push, and adjust inverter settings remotely — without a site visit. Local monitoring is also available via Bluetooth (VE.Bus Smart Dongle) or LAN.

Energy Saving Modes

When operating off-grid with low loads, idle consumption can be reduced using AES mode (40 W standby) or Search mode (13 W) — compared to 65 W in standard operation. The unit will wake automatically when a connected load is detected, preserving battery capacity during overnight or standby periods.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between this MultiPlus and the MultiPlus-II?
The MultiPlus 48V/20000VA is Victron's flagship single-inverter unit in the original MultiPlus range — designed specifically for very high power applications. The MultiPlus-II is a newer platform available in smaller ratings (up to 15 kVA in the 48 V range at time of writing) that adds built-in ESS functionality and a second AC input. For 20 kW single-unit requirements, the original MultiPlus 20k is the correct product; it already supports ESS via an external AC current sensor. If you are unsure which is right for your project, contact our team.
Can this unit be used with lithium batteries?
Yes. The MultiPlus 48V/20000VA is compatible with LiFePO₄ (lithium iron phosphate) batteries as well as all common lead-acid types (AGM, GEL, flooded, OPzS). For lithium systems, correct BMS integration is essential — typically using the VE.Bus BMS or a compatible third-party BMS that communicates cell-level protection signals to the inverter. Charge voltages and algorithms are fully configurable via VEConfigure software. Always consult a qualified Victron installer before specifying a lithium battery bank for this unit.
How does PowerAssist work with a generator or limited grid supply?
PowerAssist allows the MultiPlus to boost the output of a generator or restricted grid connection with battery power during peak load periods. For example, if your generator can supply 15 kW but your loads momentarily demand 20 kW, the MultiPlus draws the extra 5 kW from the battery bank — then recharges once load drops. The maximum AC input current threshold is set by the installer (up to 100 A), ensuring the grid connection or generator is never overloaded. This is particularly useful for generator-backed off-grid sites, marinas, or temporary supply connections.
Can three units be stacked for three-phase operation?
Yes. Three MultiPlus 20k units can be configured as a three-phase system delivering up to 60 kW (3 × 20 kW) of three-phase AC output. All units communicate via VE.Bus, and an external AC transfer switch is required for parallel configurations. This makes the MultiPlus 20k ideal for three-phase commercial premises, large agricultural sites, and industrial off-grid or hybrid installations. Configuration must be carried out by a Victron-trained installer using VEConfigure software.
What monitoring equipment do I need?
The MultiPlus connects to monitoring hardware via VE.Bus. At a minimum, an Interface MK3-USB (sold separately) is needed for initial configuration with VEConfigure software. For live monitoring and remote access, a Cerbo GX or Ekrano GX is required — this connects the system to the internet and the free VRM portal. The VRM app (iOS and Android) allows remote monitoring, alarm notifications, and settings changes from anywhere. For on-site local display without a GX device, a Digital Multi Control Panel provides basic status and PowerControl/PowerAssist adjustment.
Is the MultiPlus 48V/20000VA suitable for solar hybrid (ESS) installations?
Yes. When used with an optional external 100 A AC current sensor and a Cerbo GX or Ekrano GX, the MultiPlus 20k can operate as a full Energy Storage System (ESS) — storing solar surplus, maximising self-consumption, and preventing unwanted grid export. It is compatible with Victron MPPT solar charge controllers and with AC-coupled grid-tie inverters (subject to the Factor 1.0 rule). In the event of a grid outage, it automatically islands the critical loads, allowing connected solar generation to continue supplying power to the property.
