⚠️ F-Gas & Refrigerant: The AquaSustain contains 150 g of R290 refrigerant (propane). Servicing or refrigerant handling must only be carried out by qualified F-Gas certified technicians. The unit is sealed and cannot be recharged in the field by the user.
ℹ️ MEV Integration: The AquaSustain is classified as an Exhaust Air heat pump. In a property with MEV (Mechanical Extract Ventilation), the heat pump draws warm, stale air from kitchens and bathrooms, extracts its heat energy, and discharges cooler air outside — combining hot water production with whole-house ventilation energy recovery.
⚠️ Qualified installer required: Installation must be carried out by a qualified unvented hot water installer holding a current G3 qualification (or equivalent). Electrical connections must comply with BS 7671. Refrigerant circuit must not be altered by non-F-Gas-certified personnel.
  1. Survey and siting: Confirm the installation location can accommodate the unit dimensions (1907 × 584 × 624mm). Allow a minimum of 400mm clearance above the unit. The floor must be capable of supporting the full weight (352 kg when full of water).
  2. Ductwork design: Calculate total pressure drop for supply and extract ductwork. OSO recommends insulated ductwork (min. 0.625 m²K/W). Include all components — flexible connections, anti-insect grids — in pressure drop calculations. Connect using 150mm, 160mm, or 200mm duct adapters.
  3. Cold water supply connection: Connect the mains cold water supply to the inlet control valve (supplied). Ensure supply pressure is within system limits. The G3 kit components (strainer, PRV, expansion relief, tundish) are factory-fitted.
  4. Hot water outlet connection: Connect the hot water outlet to the distribution pipework. Add a mixing valve if required to limit draw-off temperature.
  5. Electrical connection: Wire the unit to a dedicated 230V / 13A fused spur. Do not share with other high-load appliances. Connect the immersion heater thermostat wiring as per the wiring diagram in the installation manual.
  6. Fill and commission: Fill the cylinder with cold water and check all connections for leaks. Bleed any air from the cylinder. Power up the unit and set the operating mode (ECO for heat pump only, AUTO for heat pump + immersion). Allow up to 8 hours for initial heat-up from cold.
  7. Handover: Advise the homeowner not to switch the unit off completely during normal use. The unit manages its own temperature automatically. Provide all documentation including the installation guide and G3 compliance record.
💡 Operating note: The AquaSustain is designed to trickle-heat water slowly over several hours, not to deliver rapid heat-up. Initial heat-up from cold can take up to 8 hours. The unit should remain energised at all times unless the property is empty for more than 24 hours. It manages its own thermostat automatically.
What is a heat pump cylinder and how does it differ from a standard electric cylinder?
A standard direct electric cylinder uses an immersion heater to heat water — consuming 1 kWh of electricity to produce 1 kWh of heat. The AquaSustain uses an air-source heat pump to extract heat from air and concentrate it into the water. For every 1 kWh of electricity used, the AquaSustain produces up to 3.55 kWh of useful heat — dramatically reducing running costs and carbon emissions.
Does the AquaSustain 260 need an MEV (Mechanical Extract Ventilation) system?
Not necessarily, but it is specifically classified as an Exhaust Air heat pump for MEV installations, where it doubles as a ventilation energy recovery unit. It can also operate by ducting external air directly in and out of the building. Your installer will assess which configuration suits your property.
Can the AquaSustain heat water to 60°C using the heat pump alone?
Yes. The AquaSustain can reach 60°C on heat pump power alone — sufficient for Legionella prevention without needing the auxiliary immersion heater. The 1.5 kW immersion extends the maximum to 70°C for supplementary use.
What is R290 and why is it used?
R290 is propane, a natural refrigerant with a Global Warming Potential of just 3 (compared to 675+ for R134a or over 2,000 for R410A). It has zero Ozone Depletion Potential. OSO uses R290 to ensure the AquaSustain is as environmentally responsible as possible and future-proof against F-Gas phase-down regulations.
How long does it take to heat a full cylinder from cold?
In ECO mode (heat pump only), the 260L cylinder takes approximately 517 minutes (around 8–9 hours) to heat from cold. This is by design — the unit trickle-heats over an extended period rather than delivering rapid heat-up. It should remain switched on at all times during normal occupancy.
What is the NCM / SAP identifier for the AquaSustain 260?
The SAP identifier for the AquaSustain 260 is 108964. This can be used in SAP energy calculations for new build and retrofit projects requiring Part L compliance documentation.
What duct sizes does the AquaSustain connect to?
The AquaSustain accepts 150mm, 160mm, or 200mm duct connections for both air intake and air discharge. OSO recommends thermally insulated ductwork (minimum 0.625 m²K/W) to prevent condensation. All duct runs must be included in pressure drop calculations before installation.
What warranty comes with the AquaSustain 260?
The stainless steel cylinder carries a 5-year manufacturer's warranty covering defects in materials and manufacture. Electrical components and valve gear carry a 2-year warranty. Warranty conditions apply — refer to OSO's warranty documentation.
Can I connect the AquaSustain to a solar PV system?
The auxiliary immersion heater can be controlled externally and is compatible with solar diverter devices. This allows excess solar generation to be used to heat water via the immersion, maximising self-consumption. The heat pump compressor itself operates from grid or PV power independently.
Is the AquaSustain suitable for retrofit installations?
Yes. Provided sufficient space is available (the 260L unit is 1,907mm tall), it can be installed in existing properties. The unit requires a 230V single-phase supply and ductwork for air supply and exhaust. Your installer will assess duct routing and structural suitability before installation.
