Does the built-in DC switch satisfy the BS 7671 / G98 requirement for DC isolation?

How many solar panels can I connect?
The inverter accepts one string of one or more panels in series, within a DC voltage range of 65–500V at the MPPT (500V max open circuit). For typical 400–440W panels with a Vmpp of ~35–37V and Voc of ~44–48V, a string of 2–3 panels will comfortably stay within the MPPT tracking window. The maximum recommended PV power is 1,400W STC (1.4:1 DC-to-AC oversizing ratio, within Growatt’s recommendations). Exceeding 500V DC open circuit at the lowest expected temperature will damage the inverter — always check Voc at −10°C when designing the string.
Do I need a monitoring dongle?
No dongle is required for local monitoring — the OLED display shows live output, accumulated yield, grid voltage, frequency and fault codes directly on the unit. For remote monitoring via the Growatt ShinePhone app or ShineServer web portal, you need a compatible monitoring device: ShineWi-Fi (wireless), Shine LAN (wired Ethernet) or GPRS (mobile data SIM). These plug into the 8-pin signal connector on the inverter. Only -X range monitoring dongles are compatible — older -S or non-X devices will not work with this inverter.
Is prior DNO approval needed to install this inverter?

The Growatt MIC 1000TL-X (AF) is a 1kW single-phase, single-MPPT grid-tied string inverter with two factory-integrated safety features: an Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter (AFCI) and an integrated DC isolator switch. It is the AF-DC variant of Growatt’s compact MIC TL-X residential range, designed for small rooftop PV systems on UK domestic properties. The 50V start-up voltage enables generation in low-irradiance conditions — early morning, late afternoon and overcast days — with a 65–500V MPPT tracking range and a max recommended PV array size of 1,400W STC. Maximum conversion efficiency is 97.4% (European efficiency 96.5%). The transformerless design keeps the unit to just 6 kg and 274 × 254 × 138 mm. Natural convection cooling means no fan, no moving parts, no noise. IP65 rated. G98 certified for UK grid connection. An arc fault is an unintended electrical discharge caused by damaged, degraded or loose wiring in the DC string — one of the leading causes of PV system fires. The integrated AFCI continuously monitors the DC string for the characteristic electrical signature of both series and parallel arcing. On detection, it trips and disconnects the string, stopping the arc before it can ignite insulation or mounting hardware. Unlike a standard DC fuse or MCB, AFCI responds to low-current arcing that would not trip overcurrent protection. On the AF variant, this protection is built in and always active — no separate AFCI device is needed in the DC circuit.

BS 7671 (18th Edition) and G98 require an accessible external DC isolator on grid-tied PV inverters, even if the inverter has an internal DC switch. The MIC 1000TL-X (AF) begins converting power from a DC start-up voltage of just 50V. For a typical 380–430W panel with an open-circuit voltage of around 40–48V, this means the inverter starts generating in the first and last usable hour of daylight, in overcast conditions with significant cloud cover, and in partial shading scenarios where string voltage is reduced. The wide MPPT tracking range of 65–500V provides flexibility in string design — particularly useful on small 2–3 panel strings.

The inverter’s transformerless topology eliminates the copper and iron losses of a traditional galvanic-isolation transformer, achieving 97.4% peak conversion efficiency. The European (weighted) efficiency of 96.5% accounts for performance at different power levels throughout the day, giving a more realistic picture of annual yield than peak efficiency alone. Natural Convection Cooling — Fanless, Silent, Low Maintenance
The MIC TL-X series uses natural convection (passive) cooling. There is no cooling fan: the aluminium housing dissipates heat by conduction and free air convection. Eliminating the fan removes the single component most likely to fail in residential inverters, reduces acoustic noise to zero, and removes a maintenance requirement. The inverter operates across a temperature range of −25°C to +60°C and up to 100% relative humidity. It is rated IP65 for installation in exposed locations (garage wall, external soffit, outbuilding).

At 6 kg and 274 × 254 × 138 mm, the MIC 1000TL-X (AF) can be lifted and mounted by one person without assistance. The mounting plate bolts to the wall first; the inverter then clips on. What does AFCI do and why does this inverter have it built in?
An Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter (AFCI) monitors the DC string for the electrical signature of arcing faults — rapid, irregular voltage spikes caused by damaged, loose or aged wiring in the PV array. Arc faults can occur at voltages and currents too low to trip a standard fuse or MCB, yet produce enough heat to ignite insulation, roof membranes or mounting hardware. On the MIC 1000TL-X (AF), the AFCI is integrated and always active — no separate DC AFCI device is needed in the array circuit. When an arc is detected, the inverter disconnects the string and displays a fault code. The installer must inspect and repair the DC wiring before clearing the fault and restarting.
Does the built-in DC switch satisfy the BS 7671 / G98 requirement for DC isolation?
Yes. The integrated DC switch on the MIC 1000TL-X (AF) provides the means of isolation on the DC input side required by BS 7671 18th Edition Amd.2 and G98. It allows the DC string to be safely disconnected from the inverter for maintenance and emergency isolation without requiring a separate Projoy PEDS or equivalent external switch installed immediately adjacent to the inverter. Note that where a separate DC isolator is required at the array or roof level (not at the inverter), a separate device is still needed at that location.
How many solar panels can I connect?
The inverter accepts one string of one or more panels in series, within a DC voltage range of 65–500V at the MPPT (500V max open circuit). For typical 400–440W panels with a Vmpp of ~35–37V and Voc of ~44–48V, a string of 2–3 panels will comfortably stay within the MPPT tracking window. The maximum recommended PV power is 1,400W STC (1.4:1 DC-to-AC oversizing ratio, within Growatt’s recommendations). Exceeding 500V DC open circuit at the lowest expected temperature will damage the inverter — always check Voc at −10°C when designing the string.
