4 Smart Charging Modes

The Duracell Energy app gives you four distinct charging modes, selectable and combinable to match your energy setup — whether you have solar, a home battery, a dynamic tariff or none of the above:

PureGreen
Charges your EV using 100% green energy — solar generation only. Zero grid draw during charging.
GreenBoost
Uses all available excess solar energy first, then tops up with the cheapest, greenest available grid energy to complete the charge.
Smart
Integrates with your dynamic or time-of-use tariff (e.g. Octopus Go, Agile) to automatically select the lowest-cost charging window overnight.
TimeBoost
Override mode — set a specific charge rate and target time. Works independently or layered on top of any of the above three modes when you need a guaranteed charge by a set time.
Key Features & Technology
7.4 kW Mode 3 Charging — A Full Charge Overnight
At 7.4 kW / 32A, the DuraCharger can add approximately 30 km of range per hour to a typical EV. A 60 kWh battery charges from empty to full in under 8 hours — ideal for overnight charging. Compared to a standard 3-pin plug (which could take 20+ hours), this represents a fundamental upgrade in convenience and daily usability.
Solar Compatible — Charge Directly from Your Panels
The DuraCharger measures the exact quantity of energy that would otherwise be exported to the grid and diverts it directly to your EV — more efficient than standard solar matching approaches. In GreenBoost mode, available solar is used first and the remainder is sourced from the lowest-cost grid energy, ensuring the car is always charged at minimum cost and maximum green content.
Duracell Energy Ecosystem Integration — Battery + Solar + EV on One Platform
When paired with a Dura5 battery and Dura-i hybrid inverter, the DuraCharger operates as part of a fully integrated system managed by a single AI-driven app. This means the battery and EV charger are coordinated — not competing — for cheap off-peak energy. Separate devices from different brands cannot achieve this coordination, leaving savings on the table.
PEN Fault Protection — No Earth Rod Required
Built-in PEN (Protective Earth and Neutral) fault detection continuously monitors the incoming supply for a combined neutral/earth fault — a critical safety requirement under BS 7671 Amendment 2 (2022) for EV chargers on TN-C-S (PME) supplies. This protection is integrated into the unit, eliminating the need for a separate external earth rod — which would otherwise be required on most domestic supplies.
Dynamic Tariff Integration — Octopus, Agile and All Non-Grid Services Tariffs
The DuraCharger's Smart charging mode integrates with all non-grid services tariffs, including Octopus Go, Agile, Economy 7 and comparable overnight cheap-rate tariffs. The Duracell Energy app's algorithm identifies the cheapest charging windows and schedules accordingly — automatically, without manual programming required each evening.
OCPP 1.6 JSON — Open Protocol for Flexibility
Support for OCPP 1.6 JSON (with OCPP 2.0 optional) means the DuraCharger can be managed by any compatible charge management platform, not just Duracell's own app. This is important for commercial, fleet and multi-charger installations where a central management system is required for reporting, load balancing and billing.
IP55 Rating — Outdoor Ready in Any UK Weather
IP55 ingress protection provides full dust protection and resistance to low-pressure water jets from any direction. The charger operates from -30°C to +50°C — comfortably covering the full range of UK outdoor temperatures in any season. No additional weatherproof housing or shelter is required.
Compact and Lightweight — 3.2 kg
At just 250 × 341 × 85 mm and 3.2 kg, the DuraCharger is one of the most compact home EV chargers available. It can be wall-mounted or floor-mounted and suits narrow garage walls, porch pillars or any restricted installation space. The lean profile also reduces installation time for the electrician.
Status LED Indicator — At-a-Glance Charging State
A three-colour RGB LED indicator (Red / Yellow / Green) on the unit face provides immediate visual feedback of charger status — power, active charging, fault — without needing to check the app. Combined with RFID reader access, the DuraCharger supports household-level usage monitoring and access control.
UL 94V-0 Flame Retardant Housing — Fire Safety Built In
The ABS enclosure meets the UL 94V-0 flame retardancy standard — the highest rating for plastics, indicating the material self-extinguishes within 10 seconds and produces no burning drips. This is a meaningful safety distinction for a device handling 32A in an enclosed domestic environment such as a garage.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to charge my EV with the DuraCharger?
It depends primarily on your EV's battery size and current charge level. As a guide, a 60 kWh battery charges from empty to full in under 8 hours — ideal for overnight charging. A smaller 40 kWh battery would take around 5–6 hours. Most EV drivers don't charge from empty every night; a typical daily top-up of 20–30 kWh takes 2.5–4 hours. In winter, slightly longer times should be expected due to cold battery temperatures.
Do I need solar panels to benefit from the DuraCharger?
No. The DuraCharger is fully functional as a standalone smart home charger without solar. Smart mode integrates with dynamic tariffs such as Octopus Go or Economy 7, automatically scheduling overnight charges at the cheapest rate. Solar panels add further value by enabling PureGreen and GreenBoost modes, which can charge your EV using free solar energy — effectively making your daily commute cost-free on sunny days.
Why is PEN fault protection important and do I really need it?
Under BS 7671 Amendment 2 (2022), EV chargers on TN-C-S (PME) earthing systems — which is the most common supply type in the UK — must have PEN fault detection. A PEN fault occurs when the combined neutral/protective earth conductor loses continuity, which can cause dangerous voltages on exposed metalwork including the vehicle body. With integrated PEN fault protection, the DuraCharger detects this condition and disconnects before charging begins. This replaces the external earth rod that older charger installations required.
How does the DuraCharger integrate with the Dura5 battery?
When all three components — DuraCharger, Dura5 battery and Dura-i inverter — are present, they operate on the same Duracell Energy platform and AI algorithm. The system coordinates when to charge the battery, when to divert solar to the EV, and when to draw from the grid — treating all three as one optimised energy system. With separate products from different brands, each device schedules independently and they can compete for the same cheap off-peak window, reducing total savings.
What is the difference between the 4m and 7m cable option?
The standard unit ships with a 4m tethered Type 2 cable, which suits the majority of installations where the charger is positioned close to the vehicle's charging port. The optional 7m cable is useful where the charger must be positioned further from the vehicle — for example, on the opposite side of a wide garage, at the end of a long driveway or where the charge point is wall-mounted on an end wall. Specify cable length at time of order.
