Thermox DTX Non-Toxic Ethylene Glycol Antifreeze Heat Transfer Fluid 25 Litre — GSHP ASHP Ground Air Water Heat Pump Systems

Thermox DTX is a non-toxic ethylene glycol heat transfer fluid specifically formulated for ground source, air source, and water source heat pump systems. It combines the superior heat transfer performance of ethylene glycol — better thermal conductivity, lower viscosity, and less volume needed per degree of freeze protection compared to propylene glycol — with full non-toxic classification, achieved through Hydratech's patented DeTox™ additive. ASTM D1384 and BS6580 corrosion-inhibited. Frost protection down to –50°C depending on concentration. Supplied as a 25 litre container of concentrate, sufficient to prepare approximately 100 litres of mixed system fluid at a typical heat pump operating concentration. Midsummer's shipments are tinted green for easy identification of mixed fluid in the system.

ℹ Minimum dose: 22% — Recommended use with deionised water
The minimum concentration of Thermox DTX should be no less than 22% of system volume (for protection to –10°C); maximum concentration does not normally exceed 60%. Hydratech recommends dilution using deionised, distilled or UltraPure™ water — avoid water with high calcium salt or chloride content. Use a recently calibrated refractometer to verify concentration in the mixed fluid before commissioning. As per BSRIA guide BG 29/2012, all pipework should be clean and free from contamination before filling.
⚡ Safety Data Sheet required before handling
Although classified as non-toxic, Thermox DTX is a chemical product. The Safety Data Sheet (SDS) must be obtained and read before handling, storage, or disposal. Available from Hydratech ([email protected]) or on request. 24/7 technical support: 01792 586800. Store in sealed containers below 40°C, out of direct sunlight.
Features & Benefits
✔ Ethylene Glycol Performance — Without the Toxicity
Propylene glycol (MPG) became the standard non-toxic heat transfer fluid, but it has inferior heat transfer characteristics — it is more viscous, harder to pump at low temperatures, and requires larger volumes for the same freeze protection. Thermox DTX's patented DeTox™ additive prevents ethylene glycol from metabolising into toxic by-products (which cause kidney failure, blindness, and death), giving it non-toxic classification while retaining EG's better thermal conductivity, lower viscosity, and more efficient freeze protection per litre.
✔ Better Pump Performance at Low Temperatures
In ground source heat pump systems where ground loop fluid temperatures can drop to –5°C to –10°C during peak demand, fluid viscosity directly affects pump energy consumption and flow rate. Thermox DTX's lower dynamic viscosity compared to propylene glycol reduces pumping power requirements and helps maintain the minimum flow rate through the heat pump heat exchanger — particularly important at the start of the heating season when ground temperatures are lowest.
✔ ASTM D1384 & BS6580 Corrosion Inhibited
Thermox DTX contains synergistic corrosion inhibitors protecting all metals commonly found in heat pump circuits — copper, steel, cast iron, aluminium, brass, and solder. Independently tested and certified to meet ASTM D1384 (the industry standard for heat transfer fluid corrosion performance) and BS6580. Scale and biological inhibitors also included to prevent fouling and maintain thermal efficiency over the system's operating life.
✔ Readily Biodegradable
Thermox DTX mixtures are readily biodegradable — 90% over ten days — and will not persist in the environment or bioaccumulate. This is significant for ground source and borehole installations, where a leak of fluid into the surrounding ground could raise environmental and regulatory concerns with a conventional ethylene glycol product. The DeTox™ formulation addresses this risk.
✔ Frost Protection to –50°C
At standard heat pump concentrations of 22–33% (protecting to –10°C to –20°C), Thermox DTX requires less concentrate volume than propylene glycol for equivalent protection. For extreme cold applications — Nordic-climate GSHP or exposed pipework — concentrations of up to 54.3% protect to –50°C. The dilution table and refractometer indices allow precise concentration checking on site.
✔ Green-Tinted — Easy System Identification
Midsummer's Thermox DTX supply is tinted green, making it easy to confirm the presence of inhibited antifreeze fluid in a system during commissioning or servicing — a drain-down test or visual check of a small sample confirms whether the system is filled with treated fluid. This is particularly useful when taking over a system from another installer or when checking a system after top-up.
