What is the difference between the Monsoon Professional and a standard shower pump?
A standard shower pump (such as the Stuart Turner Showermate range) is designed to boost a single shower outlet — it connects between the hot and cold supplies and the shower head and switches on when the shower valve is opened. The Monsoon Professional is a whole-home booster pump — it connects to the cold-water storage tank and boosts the cold supply to the entire property's plumbing system, including hot water cylinder fill, all showers, baths, taps, and washing machine. This means every outlet benefits simultaneously, without the pressure drop that occurs when a single-outlet shower pump is used while other taps are open elsewhere.
Why is variable speed better than fixed speed for a whole-home booster pump?
A fixed-speed pump runs at full power whenever any tap opens — whether it's one tap trickling or four showers at full flow. This causes pressure surges when it switches on, unnecessary noise and energy consumption at low demand, and mechanical stress from repeated starts and stops. A variable-speed pump modulates its motor speed to deliver exactly the pressure the system needs at any given moment. When one tap is open, it runs slowly and quietly. When four outlets are active, it ramps to full speed. The result is steady, consistent pressure at all outlets, lower energy consumption, and longer pump life.
Can it boost hot water as well as cold?
The Monsoon Professional boosts the cold water supply from the storage tank. In a typical vented hot water system, this boosted cold supply feeds the hot water cylinder (which is then heated by the boiler or immersion heater), so the hot water drawn from the cylinder indirectly benefits from the boosted system — the cylinder fills faster and the balanced pressure improves at mixer showers and thermostatic taps. The pump must not be used to boost water at temperatures above 23°C — it is not designed for direct hot water boosting from a cylinder outlet.
Is it suitable for a property with a combi-boiler?
Yes — Stuart Turner specifically lists combi-boiler properties and pressurised hot water cylinders as ideal applications for the Monsoon Professional. In these properties, the Monsoon Professional boosts the cold water from the storage tank to the cold supply around the home, ensuring consistent cold pressure at all outlets. Combined with the combi boiler's own mains pressure hot water output, this can significantly improve the balance between hot and cold at mixer showers and thermostatic bath valves. If your property has no cold water tank at all (i.e. the cold supply goes directly from the mains to all outlets and the combi boiler), you would need a mains booster pump such as the STORMBOOST or Mainsboost instead.
