Eastron SDM120DB-MID Single-Phase DIN Rail Energy Meter with Backlit LCD Display

Eastron SDM120DB-MID Single-Phase DIN Rail Energy Meter with Backlit LCD Display

The Eastron SDM120DB-MID is a compact, MID-certified single-phase energy meter built for accurate, billing-grade kWh measurement in residential, commercial, and light industrial settings. Housed in a slim 1-module (18 mm) DIN rail enclosure, it clips neatly into any standard distribution board and begins logging consumption immediately — no configuration software required for basic use. The backlit LCD display distinguishes the SDM120DB from the plain SDM120D, giving clear readings even in dimly lit consumer units. A 1000 imp/kWh pulse output enables straightforward integration with external energy management systems, data loggers, or pulse counters, making this meter equally at home as a standalone sub-meter or as a node in a larger monitoring network.

⚠ Installer / Safety Notice
Installation must be carried out by a qualified electrician. Always isolate the circuit before connecting or disconnecting the meter. Never operate with the terminal cover removed. Do not connect this meter to a three-phase 400 V network — it is rated for single-phase 230 V AC only. Observe polarity on the pulse output (5–27 V DC, max 27 mA opto-coupler).
ℹ MID B+D Certified — Suitable for Billing & Sub-Metering
The SDM120DB-MID carries MID (Measuring Instruments Directive) B+D certification under EU Directive 2014/32/EU (certificate number 0120/SGS0141), recognised in the UK. This means the meter is legally approved for energy billing, tenant sub-metering, feed-in monitoring, and any application where measured energy data has commercial or contractual significance. Sealable terminal covers are supplied to prevent tampering and preserve legal traceability.
⚠ Compatibility Note
This is a direct-connected meter rated to 45 A. It is not suitable for higher-current circuits — for loads above 45 A, a current-transformer (CT) operated variant such as the SDM120CT-Modbus is required. The pulse output requires an external DC supply (5–27 V DC); it is not self-powered. If remote data logging via RS485 Modbus or M-Bus is needed, consider the SDM120-Modbus or SDM120-MBus variants instead.
Key Features
🔅 Backlit LCD Display

The white-backlit LCD screen provides clear, easy-to-read figures in any lighting condition — ideal for consumer units in cupboards, lofts, or plant rooms. Scroll through readings using the front-panel button: total kWh, import kWh, export kWh, voltage, current, active power, frequency, and power factor are all accessible.

✅ MID B+D Legal-for-Trade Accuracy

Class 1 / Class B accuracy certified to IEC 62053-21 and EN 50470-3. Active energy measurement error is within ±1% across the rated operating range. This billing-grade precision satisfies UK and EU metering regulations for landlord–tenant sub-billing, EV charge point metering, and solar generation monitoring.

🔌 1000 imp/kWh Pulse Output

A fixed-rate opto-isolated pulse output at 1000 impulses per kWh allows the meter to feed data to energy management systems, building management controllers, Raspberry Pi loggers, or any pulse-counting device. The LED pulse indicator also flashes in real time — faster consumption, faster flash — giving instant visual feedback on load level.

🔩 1-Module DIN Rail Fit

At just 18 mm wide, the SDM120DB occupies only a single module slot on a standard 35 mm DIN rail — the same footprint as a single MCB. This makes it easy to retrofit into existing distribution boards without expanding the enclosure, and allows multiple meters to be installed side by side for multi-circuit sub-metering.

🔥 Tamper-Resistant Design

Sealable terminal covers are supplied as standard, preventing unauthorised access to wiring connections and maintaining the integrity of the MID certification. The self-extinguishing UL94V0-rated enclosure provides additional fire safety. The meter carries Protective Class II double-insulated construction.

🏠 Wide Application Range

Suited to residential sub-metering, EV charger energy measurement, solar PV generation monitoring, outbuilding supplies, office landlord billing, and light commercial circuits. The SDM120DB measures both import and export kWh, making it particularly useful where solar generation or battery storage creates bi-directional energy flows on a single-phase circuit.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between the SDM120DB and the SDM120D?
Both meters are functionally identical single-phase, 45 A, MID-certified kWh meters with a 1000 imp/kWh pulse output and LCD readout. The only difference is the display: the SDM120DB has a white backlight, while the SDM120D has a plain LCD with no illumination. Choose the SDM120DB if the meter will be read in a dark or low-light location such as a cupboard, loft, or poorly lit plant room.
Can this meter be used for EV charger sub-metering?
Yes — the SDM120DB-MID is a popular choice for single-phase EV charger monitoring. Its MID B+D certification satisfies the metering accuracy requirements applicable to public and workplace charge points, and its 1000 imp/kWh pulse output can interface with charge point management systems. For a 7.2 kW single-phase charger the 45 A current rating is sufficient (32 A circuit). If you need Modbus RS485 communication for direct data integration with an EVSE or energy management platform, consider the SDM120-Modbus variant.
Is the SDM120DB-MID suitable for solar PV generation monitoring?
Yes. The meter records import kWh, export kWh, and total kWh separately, which makes it well suited to monitoring generation from a solar PV system on a single-phase connection. Export readings are displayed on-screen and reflected in the pulse output. For more detailed real-time monitoring alongside an inverter, a Modbus-enabled variant with RS485 communication may offer tighter integration with inverter data platforms, but for straightforward generation or consumption recording the SDM120DB-MID is an excellent low-cost choice.
How does the pulse output work, and what can I connect it to?
The pulse output is an opto-isolated SPST normally-open contact (passive transistor) that generates 1000 pulses per kWh of energy consumed. It requires an external DC supply of 5–27 V at up to 27 mA — it cannot drive a load directly without this external voltage source. Polarity must be observed (see the wiring diagram). It can be connected to energy management systems, building management controllers, data loggers, smart home hubs with pulse inputs, or simple pulse-counting devices. The onboard LED indicator mirrors the pulse output, flashing faster as load increases.
What readings can I scroll through on the display?
After power-on and a 3-second self-check, the default display shows total active energy (kWh). Pressing the front-panel scroll button cycles through: import kWh → export kWh → voltage (V) → current (A) → active power (W) → frequency (Hz) → power factor. Holding the button for 3 seconds enters set-up mode. The maximum accumulated reading is 99,999.9 kWh before the counter rolls over.
Does the SDM120DB-MID comply with UK metering regulations?
Yes. The meter holds MID certification under EU Directive 2014/32/EU (type examination certificate 0120/SGS0141, Notified Body 0120), which remains recognised in Great Britain under retained legislation following the UK's departure from the EU. This makes it legally suitable for billing and sub-metering applications in the UK, including landlord–tenant arrangements, shared workspace energy billing, EV charge point energy accounting, and feed-in tariff verification. The sealable terminal covers maintain the integrity of the calibration seal once installed.
