ASHP insulated pipework must be clipped around the outside of the insulation — not clamped to the pipe itself — to prevent compressing the insulation, creating cold bridges, or trapping moisture. Wall Sleeves (PS028 / PS035)

Standard plastic pipe sleeves are not designed for insulated ASHP pipework — they are either too small or too large. Primary Pro Sleeves are purpose-sized to fit Primary Pro insulated pipework through a wall core, protecting the insulation from debris, mortar chemicals, and moisture. Rubber-Lined Clips and Back Plates

ASHP insulated pipework must be clipped around the outside of the insulation — not clamped to the pipe itself — to prevent compressing the insulation, creating cold bridges, or trapping moisture. Primary Pro rubber-lined clips are sized for the insulated OD. The rubber lining protects the insulation from direct metal contact, especially important in direct sunlight when metal clips can heat up and adhere to the surface. Minimum one clip per metre run.

Bond and Seal 290ml — AS001

Specialist hybrid polymer sealant in a standard 290ml mastic gun cartridge. Deep black finish blends with Primary Pro insulation. Used to seal all insulation joints, wall penetrations (around sleeves and sealing rings), and the insulation-to-heat pump connection. Remains flexible when cured — expands and contracts with temperature changes without cracking. Essential for a weatherproof, Part L compliant installation.

Over Coat (PPOC) — Colour Matching

Where a homeowner prefers the external pipework to blend with the property rather than show the standard black insulation finish, Primary Pro Over Coat can be applied after installation to colour-match to brickwork, render, or stonework. Does not affect thermal performance or waterproof integrity. Applied directly to the cured installed insulation surface.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can't standard pipe lagging be used on external ASHP pipework?

Standard closed-cell foam lagging degrades under UV exposure — it becomes brittle, cracks, and absorbs moisture. Wet insulation conducts heat rather than retaining it, directly reducing the heat pump's COP and SCOP. It has no integral weatherproof coating, so moisture enters through cuts, joints, and clip holes. For external ASHP pipework exposed to UK weather across a 10-15 year installation lifetime, standard foam lagging is not appropriate. Primary Pro's factory-applied UV-stable waterproof coating addresses all of these failure modes.

Is Primary Pro Part L compliant?

Yes. Primary Pro insulation meets the Part L Building Regulations requirements for external ASHP pipe insulation and is MCS-compatible. The 19mm wall thickness on 28mm, 35mm, and 42mm bore, and 25mm on 22mm bore, satisfy the external heating pipework requirements. The Bond and Seal sealed system — including the wall penetration — is required for full Part L compliance; unsealed or partial insulation does not satisfy the standard.

Do I need to insulate the connection at the heat pump unit itself?

Yes — and this is one of the most commonly missed steps. The insulation-to-heat pump casing connection must be sealed with Bond and Seal. The heat pump generates vibration during operation and any unsealed gap will open over time, allowing moisture to track inside the insulation. Bond and Seal remains flexible when cured and accommodates vibration without cracking.

How often does Primary Pro insulation need to be maintained?

Inspect during the annual heat pump service. If the outer surface shows wear, discolouration, or cracking, apply Primary Pro Maintenance Coat to restore the protective finish. Testing has shown that installations not in direct south-facing sunlight may not require recoating within the first five years. Bond and Seal joints at the wall penetration and heat pump connection should also be checked and touched up if any gap or shrinkage is visible.

Can Primary Pro be used alongside Intaflex pre-insulated flexible pipes?

Yes — Primary Pro was developed in direct collaboration with Intatec, the manufacturer of Intaflex. The pre-made valve jackets (AS32, AS33, AS52, AS53) are purpose-designed for Intatec external valves used on Intaflex installations. Bond and Seal is suitable for sealing the junction between Intaflex and Primary Pro rigid insulation, and for sealing to the heat pump casing.
